Paying tribute to the project site’s past, a rodeo arena, the design of this fire station evokes the simplicity and beauty found in vernacular Arizona ranch buildings. Features such as deeply overhung windows and a large shaded patio were brought into the design to create shelter from the harsh desert environment. The 14,000 s.f. facility contains four apparatus bays and living quarters for 10 department personnel, a kitchen and a fully-equipped fitness facility.
The design also incorporates numerous “green” building features, such as indigenous landscaping, dual flush toilets, day lighting, operable windows, non-PVC window shading products, and sports flooring with 90% post-consumer tire waste. The structure establishes a palette of forms and materials that belong to the region and allows for creative reinterpretation for the design of future buildings for the City’s Master Plan.
